Flowers of Remembrance
The Day Before Memorial Day 2025
We've completed our initial ceremony and support coordination meeting with the Arlington National Cemetery team for Flowers of Remembrance on Sunday, 25 May 2025.
If this will be your first time participating, you are in for a truly unique and meaningful experience. Our foundation's executive director commanded 3d Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and served previous to that in that unit. He stood on the Tomb plaza several times as the Officer-in-Charge of wreath ceremonies for visiting heads of state and the US President, in addition to hosting various wreath ceremonies. He still tears up a bit when he steps on the plaza and lays a flower there.
If you've participated before, you know the power of stepping onto the Tomb plaza and laying a flower. This year, you'll get another experience. Our volunteer team will be more visible and engaged with you as you wait in line to lay a flower. You'll get to meet and talk with former senior officers and noncommissioned officers from The Old Guard, former sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and volunteers from impressive organizations who personify service and sacrifice. We look forward to seeing you there.
What You Need to Know to Participate in Flowers of Remembrance on Sunday, 25 May 2025.
Members of the public are invited to take advantage of the unique opportunity to place a flower at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Sunday, 25 May 2025 in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. Stepping onto the plaza at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a privilege normally reserved only for Tomb Sentinels, military leaders, and a few others. This is your chance to honor those who have served and sacrificed for America in a truly unique way. As our Foundation President says, "Watch people as they depart the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; they leave profoundly changed." This is your opportunity to experience that feeling and leave with a new feeling about our nation and those who serve.
The ceremony will begin at 8 AM and continue until 4:30 PM. The lines are longer during the middle of the day, so consider that as you make your plans.
Don't despair if you show up and there is a line waiting to lay a flower. We will have volunteers engaging with those who are in line, offering information about our connections with the Tomb, our service, and how those things have affected our lives. Some of our volunteers will include:
Flowers will be provided by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Foundation, so you don't need to bring your own flowers. In conjunction with ANC, we are striving to make it as simple as possible for you to take advantage of this rare opportunity.
We expect that Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) will offer a public program that morning during which ANC historians will provide a public program on the history of Decoration Day/Memorial Day. Check here or ANC's website for that announcement.
Some important things to consider as you plan your visit to ANC on Sunday, 25 May 2025:
- Getting Here, Including Metro Access
- Security Procedures and Restricted Items
- Tram Tours (including access to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the Welcome Center)
- Access for Visitors with Disabilities
Remember that the annual "Rolling to Remember" motorcycle ride may take place on the same day as Flowers of Remembrance.

A Never Forget Garden Marker in France
This picture was taken by General de Quatrebarbes at his family farm outside Jublains, France.
He writes about the picture, "Attached is a photo of three young boys, our grand children, looking at the stone, and trying to identify 'peace, value, victory'."
This is another chapter in the amazing tribute by the people of Jublains, France.

Arlington National Cemetery recently announced that we will again be able to welcome members of the public onto the plaza at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to personally lay a flower at the Tomb.
If you are interested in volunteering to make this event work smoothly, please click here to go to the short form at this link to sign up to volunteer.
This form asks for your name, contact information, an emergency contact, and during what time periods you are able to volunteer. (Only Tomb of the Unknown Soldier persons will have access to this information and we never share your private information with other organizations.)
At the bottom of the form it lists the dates, times, and connection data for our briefing to our volunteers about how we will execute this event. We ask that all volunteers participate in one of these sessions, during which we will also respond to your questions.
Everyone who fills out the volunteer form will receive another email from me that lists the dates, times, and connection data for the briefings. That email will also include more details about the event.

Volunteering for Flowers of Remembrance
Flowers of Remembrance is an event that provides members of the public the opportunity to lay a flower on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. It is one of the very rare occasions during which members of the public are allowed on the plaza at the Tomb. More importantly, it offers our fellow Americans with a personal and emotional experience that highlights the critical importance of service and sacrifice in a democratic republic like ours. As our Foundation President says, "Watch people as they depart the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; they leave profoundly changed."
We're looking for volunteers who can work with us:
We'll host a couple of Zoom sessions that will allow us to provide you with detailed information about volunteering.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization incorporated in DC. None of our officers or directors are compensated for their time. Like any nonprofit, we solicit for donations, but we never ask for quid pro quo donations (e.g., make individuals pay for a flower to lay on TUS or in order to volunteer) and never use donations to purchase goods or services from a for-profit entity with which our foundation, officers, or directors have an interest or a family relationship.
Please consider clicking the DONATE button above and helping us continue our work.
You can always reach us at [email protected].
We're looking for volunteers who can work with us:
- Over the coming weeks to:
- Publicize this event and encourage participation
- Assist in the planning and organization of volunteers
- On Saturday, 25 May, to:
- Receive and process flowers
- Move flowers from the processing area to a storage area near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
- Clean up the processing area
- On Sunday, 26 May, to:
- Move flowers from the storage area to the tables from which they are distributed
- Hand flowers to members of the public in the afternoon
- Provide water and other assistance to volunteers
- Clean up after the event
We'll host a couple of Zoom sessions that will allow us to provide you with detailed information about volunteering.
